Color Matching

There are three things which are necessary if you hope to have any success in matching colors:

1st thing- some knowledge of color and color theory

2nd thing- experience

3rd thing- patience, lots of patience

When a customer says they want a color “like the one in this picture” or “kind of like the cabinet in the den”, that’s really not too difficult to come up up with.

It’s when they want an exact match. That’s when the fun begins.

Exact matches are made more difficult because of the aged patina of an existing piece.

If I am unable to to get a match simply by mixing up a color then I will do it in layers of color with a sealer between each layer:

1st layer- the highlight or background color

2nd layer- darker top color (could be more than one)

3rd layer- aged patina
